Once called the 'Inaccessible Islands', the South Orkneys remain among the world’s remotest land masses. These lonely rocks lie between South Georgia Island and the South Shetlands and host two scientific stations: Argentina’s Orcadas on Laurie Island and Britain’s Signy. A Scottish expedition led by William Bruce first explored them in 1903, establishing the station that is now Orcadas, the Antarctic region’s oldest continuously operating station.
