Arriving at the port
Cruise ships cannot berth at this location, so inflatable zodiac boats carry passengers ashore.
Sightseeing
After passing between the soaring cliffs of the breathtaking Neumayer Channel, you reach one of Antarctica's most exciting anchorages: Port Lockroy, also called Rothera. The harbour occupies the west of Wiencke Island. Ringed by high mountains, Port Lockroy's sheltered harbour was a favourite anchorage for whalers earlier in the century, and the many large bones ashore form a grim memorial. Winston Churchill established a survey and weather station here during World War II to defend British interests in the Southern Ocean. Today it is home to the tiny UK Antarctic Heritage Trust.
