Sightseeing
Passing between the soaring cliffs of the breathtaking Neumayer Channel, arrive at one of Antarctica's most exciting anchorages: Port Lockroy (also Rothera). The harbor is on the west side of Wiencke Island. Port Lockroy's sheltered harbor, surrounded by high mountains, was a favorite anchorage for whaling ships earlier in the century - the many great bones on the shore act as a grim memorial. It is here that Winston Churchill established a survey and weather station during World War II to protect British interests in the Southern Ocean, and it is the location today of the tiny UK Antarctic Heritage Trust.
