At the southern end of the narrow, fjord-like Lemaire Channel, threading between the western islands off the Antarctic Peninsula, is Petermann Island. French explorer Dr. Jean-Baptiste Charcot anchored the Pourquoi-pas? here in 1909. The southernmost Gentoo Penguin breeding colony occupies this 1.6 metre (1 mile island), positioned immediately below the Lemaire Channel. The island's dome reaches 200 metres (650 feet) above the sea. Adélie Penguins, shags and South Polar Skuas live here as well.
