Peter I Island is a Norwegian dependency in the Bellingshausen Sea, about 400 miles (640 km) west of Palmer Land on the Antarctic Peninsula. The Russian explorer Bellinghausen discovered it in 1821, in what was believed to be the first sighting of land inside the Antarctic Circle.
