Port Denarau

Tenders carry passengers to the good Port Denarau cruise terminal in the heart of the leading resorts. Hotels organise quite a few activities within their grounds.

If you are slightly adventurous, make the effort to leave the resorts and visit countryside villages. Be warned that 'Fiji time' is no myth and remains very much alive. When a Fijian describes somewhere as a short walk or says it will take no time at all, ask for a little more detail about the distance and what 'no time' means to them.

Port Denarau is the departure point for offshore island resorts, with plenty of day cruises to the island available.

Another option is the Bula bus, which travels between resorts on Denarau Island and takes passengers on a scenic journey around the island. The fare for an all-day pass is about 9 FJD.

A taxi to Nadi costs around $10. The town is not really attractive, but it is interesting.

Denarau Golf & Racquet Club opened on the 9th June, 1993 and has a par 72, 6538-metre resort course.

Close to the port are several restaurants, Hard Rock Cafe, a supermarket, bakery, hairdresser's and tour operators.

The currency is the Fijian dollar (FJD).

English is an official language, used for education and spoken by most people in Nadi, Suva and every other major tourist area. On a few less-visited islands, English may be spoken with some difficulty. Most adults and children speak Fijian or Hindustani (Hindi/Urdu), and learning even a few important phrases will help earn local respect.

Some shops open as early as 6.00am and others trade from 8.00am until 6.00pm to 7.00pm during the week, then from 7.00am to 1.00pm on Saturday. Shops are generally closed on Sundays and Public Holidays, although restaurants, milk bars and other essential businesses stay open.
