For a historical perspective, glimpse Japanese feudal life in 200 BC at Toro archaeological site.

Several tours are available.

03

Food and shopping

Souvenir shops close to Shimizu port sell traditional Japanese wooden handicrafts and fabrics distinctive to the region.

04

Money

Japan's currency is the yen. Notes are issued in ¥10,000, ¥5,000 and ¥1,000 denominations, alongside coins of ¥500, ¥100, ¥50, ¥10, ¥5 and ¥1.

Japanese ATMs are becoming more useful, and most can withdraw money from overseas accounts; post offices also provide ATMs. Major credit cards are accepted by most shops and restaurants in large urban areas, but carry sufficient cash if you intend to spend time in rural districts. Japan is still very much a cash society, and some shops, hotels and restaurants refuse cards regardless of location.

Do not tip, as it is considered rude!
