Arriving at the port
Naze Port stands in the north-west of Amami Oshima Island, close to the centre of town. The distance is 2km, described as a walk of about 15 min.
Amami Oshima, part of Kagoshima Prefecture, is the largest island in the Satsunan chain between Kyushu and Okinawa. Its climate, beaches, wildlife and plant life, including mangrove forests and large ferns, give it much in common with the Okinawan Islands farther south. White sand and clear, warm water line the coast, making the beaches attractive for summer swimming. They are generally quieter than Okinawa's; many suit swimming and relaxation, while some are also good for snorkelling...
Getting around
Taxis wait at the port and serve most attractions in the area, providing a convenient choice for anyone who wants to explore at their own pace.
Food and shopping
Amami is noted for the traditional craft of Oshima Tsumugi silk. Workshops welcome visitors to watch these fine textiles being produced.
Money
Japan uses the yen, issued as ¥10,000, ¥5,000 and ¥1,000 notes, together with ¥500, ¥100, ¥50, ¥10, ¥5 and ¥1 coins.
