01

Arriving at the port

Cruise vessels berth at Fujiwara Pier within an industrial area, with nothing of interest in walking distance.

Miyako City in Iwate Prefecture was among the northernmost communities devastated by the 2011 Tsunami. Rising water swept through many coastal districts, destroying houses, businesses, port infrastructure and much of the fishing fleet. Some of the disaster's most memorable footage came from Miyako, showing an immense black surge overwhelming the town's seawall and carrying away boats, cars and everything else in its path. The city is also recognised for a beautiful shoreline, particularly popular Jodogahama Beach on a scenic peninsula immediately north of the centre...

02

Money

Japan uses the yen. Banknotes are issued as ¥10,000;¥5,000 and ¥1,000, with coins in denominations of ¥500, ¥100, ¥50, ¥10, ¥5 and ¥1.
