Arriving at the port
Maizuru was founded as a naval port in 1901, grew in importance during the subsequent Russo-Japanese War and remains a centre for the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force. Ships berth at Maizuru International Wharf, Wharf No. 2, approximately a 10-minute walk or 5-minute taxi journey from JR Maizuru Line's Nishi-Maizuru Station.
The Golden Temple is regarded as the leading example of Muromachi Era (1337 - 1573) design. Ryonanji's celebrated Zen rock garden arranges 15 rocks within meticulously raked white gravel.
Maizuru is one of Kyoto's principal port cities in Japan, occupying an inlet of the Sea of Japan. Rich in nature and set around scenic Maizuru Bay, the city has two parts: Nishi-Maizuru and Higashi-Maizuru.
The ruins of Fukuoka Castle are among Maizuru's main attractions and stand in centrally located Maizuru Park. Only ruined walls and several turrets survive, but the grounds include walking trails and lookout points. Late March to early April is generally the best time to visit, when cherry blossom transforms the park into the city's most pleasant viewing spot.

Money
Japan's currency is the yen. Notes come in denominations of ¥10,000, ¥5,000 and ¥1,000, while coins are issued as ¥500, ¥100, ¥50, ¥10, ¥5 and ¥1.
Japanese ATMs are becoming increasingly useful, and most allow withdrawals from overseas accounts. Post offices have cash machines too. Major cards work at most shops and restaurants in large cities, but carry enough cash when visiting rural districts. Japan remains strongly cash-based, and some shops, hotels and restaurants refuse cards regardless of location.
