Christopher Columbus discovered Isla Catalina, which remains uninhabited today. Covering only 9.6 square km, it preserves key ecosystems including sand dunes, mangroves and reefs.
Catalina suits a day of swimming, hiking and exploration. Its coral-stone formation has three overlapping plateaus, the highest reaching 60 feet above sea level. There is no fresh water at all; animals drink from the sole water source, which contains traces of salt.
