Arriving at the port
Amber Cove began receiving ships in 2015 and principally serves vessels from Carnival Corporation. Its success led Puerto Plata to build a second cruise facility, Taíno Bay, which opened in December 2021.
Complimentary tuk tuks, or rickshaws, carry visitors from the Taíno Bay pier to the port entrance. A tip for the driver is recommended.
A large swimming pool is among Taíno Bay's standout facilities, complete with submerged loungers and a swim-up bar. Guests use the pool free of charge, although drinks cost extra. Free beach beds and chairs are offered beside it on a first-come, first-served basis. Between the DJ music, tropical drinks and respite from the strong Dominican sun, the pool can easily fill an entire port day.
With two ports, Puerto Plata is the most popular destination in the Dominican Republic; La Romana follows in a distant second place.

The Amber Coast takes its name from the plentiful translucent stone with its burnt-orange colour.
Although the facilities and attractions at Amber Cove are recent, the area's history reaches back to the 1490s. Christopher Columbus first encountered Puerto Plata, where Fuerte de San Felipe became one of the earliest forts in the Americas. Puerto Plata is now a popular beach town, yet a walking tour or visits to local museums and landmarks still reveal its Spanish colonial heritage.
