Arriving at the port

Alotau is the capital of Milne Bay Province, a province of Papua New Guinea. It is located on the northern shore of Milne Bay.

Alotau is spectacularly sited on the edge of Milne Bay, and is principally used by visitors as a jumping off point for other destinations. Like most other towns in Papua New Guinea, Alotau is worth a visit for its stunning views, bushwalks, and local customs. The harbor is alive with activity, and is only a short walk from town.

Alotau is the gateway to the Milne Bay Province which contains some of the most remote island communities in the world. The whole of Milne bay is noted for its coral reef and scuba diving experiences.

There are plenty of taxis and mini-buses to show you around. The drivers are extremely honest and friendly.

The village trips can take you to from Alotau Suau and Savaia, and multiple islands and villages in between and take you to Nuakata, Goodenough, and many of the other islands in Milne Bay Province.

Ecotourism is being developed here focusing on the rainforest, trekking, bird watching, bat caving, fishing, diving, snorkeling, war sites, surfing and cultural sites of interest. The province has the richest marine biodiversity in the world, which is why so many divers come to the area. There are orchids, marsupials, birds of paradise, mountains, islands, rainforest, waterfalls, hot springs and skull caves as well as a fascinating local history.
