Ithaca, also written Ithaka, is one of Greece’s Ionian Islands.
Vathi’s history-filled horseshoe harbour invites exploration. As the island’s capital, it has quaint, pastel-coloured houses descending the hillside.
Getting around
More than half of Ithaca’s beaches can only be reached by sea. Without a yacht or speedboat, hire a small boat to visit them; boats with engines below 30hp need no special legal permit.
Nearby places
Kathara Monastery, Anogi, Ithaca: follow the Stavros road from Vathi and, about 8km outside the town, take the signed turn for Kathara Monastery. This historic monastery and church was built around 1700A.D. at 600m, with a fine view over Vathi bay.

Public services open Monday to Friday, 8.00am – 2.00pm. Retail stores and specialty shops trade Monday to Friday, 9am – 1.30pm and again 5pm – 9pm; on Saturdays, 9am – 2pm. Supermarkets operate Monday to Friday, 9am – 9pm, and Saturdays, 9am – 6pm. Most tourist shops and convenience stores have no formal hours, often opening from dawn to well after midnight during summer.
