01

Arriving at the port

Katapola, the principal harbour on Amorgos, receives cruise visitors by tender.

Within the Greek Cyclades, Amorgos is the easternmost island and sits closest to the neighbouring Dodecanese group.

Across Amorgos, striking sandy and rocky beaches lie beneath steep cliffs or green hillsides.

Amorgos shares the rich archaeological and historical heritage of the other Cycladic islands. Chora, the island's capital, contains several notable sights. Foremost is the Byzantine Monastery of Panagia Chozoviotissa, an outstanding work of church architecture embedded in a cliff face; its Virgin Mary icon is believed to have been created by Luke the Evangelist. At Chora's highest point, the 13th-century Castle provides another imposing landmark, with its walls and the Church of Agios Georgios.

Tourism largely passed the island by until Luc Besson filmed The Big Blue there, bringing Amorgos wider recognition.
