Thorshavn

The harbor sits near the town centre. A shuttle bus runs from the bottom of the gangway to the port entrance, about a half mile towards town.

Tórshavn is on the east coast of Streymoy, to the south.

Around year 900, the Vikings established the first parliament on Tinganes. Over the last century the town has expanded considerably and merged with neighbouring Argir to the south and Hoyvík to the north. Tórshavn is both the capital and, by far, the Faroe Islands' largest town.

Tórshavn combines old and new in a charming way. Tinganes, around the harbor, is home to the government and also to Tórshavn's ‘old town'. Its cute, small houses have been restored in recent years, turning the area into a cosy place where people wish to live.

Above the harbor stands Skansin, an old fortress built in 1580 to defend Tórshavn against pirates.

The city-centre Vaglið is five minutes' walk from the harbor and includes Løgtingið, the Faeroese parliament. Shops, restaurants, hotels and a cinema are also nearby. After a further 5-10 minutes on foot, you reach SMS, a modern shopping center with many shops, banks and restaurants, where people in Tórshavn meet and exchange the latest news while shopping.

Tórshavn is a cosy town, largely made up of small houses in every colour. This tiny little capital has all the essentials: a shopping center, restaurants, hotels, cinema's, tourist-information, disco's, sports arena's, swimming-center etc.

A taxi tour is a good choice, at about 60-70 Euro per hour. In 2 hours, you can see most of the island's highlights: grass topped building; churches; and Viking dwellings.

The blue intertown buses of the daily Bygdaleiðir system serve most areas. A comprehensive Ferðaætlan schedule for intertown buses and ferries is available from the tourist office and from the central bus station near the harbor in Tórshavn.

Tórshavn, the capital, has a free local bus service, Bussleiðin, with four routes reaching most parts of town. Red buses run every half hour by day and hourly in the evening and on Saturdays and Sundays. Kollafjørður is included in the local bus service. Route maps and schedules are available on the buses, at Kiosk Steinatún in the town centre, or at Kunningarstovan.

The pyramid mountain on the impressive island of Kunoy towers over the entrance to Klaksvík's harbor, while dwellings are beautifully spread across the hillsides surrounding its well-sheltered bay and harbor.

Look out for Faroese woollen goods, stuffed birds, ceramics, wood articles, jewelry, music, stamps and posters among the many souvenirs of particular interest.

Tipping is not customary. Service fees are normally built into the price of everything from a fancy restaurant meal and a taxi ride across town to a haircut at the hairdresser.

Although Danish coins are used, the Faroese government prints the króna as its own currency, reflecting its self governing status within the Kingdom of Denmark. Its exchange value matches the Danish krone, Danish notes are accepted equally with the Faroese króna throughout the country, and there is no service charge for exchange.

Danish is spoken and English is well understood.

The library near the post office provides free internet. It is usually open on weekdays from 8:00am to 6:00pm, but internet is generally available only after 1:00pm because school children have it reserved in the morning.

Most shops open from 9:00/10.00 to 17:30, although many retailers stay open until 19:00 on Friday. Saturday shopping is limited: stores open at 9:00 and close at either 12:00, 14:00 or 16:00. All stores are closed on Sundays.
