Making the most of Takoradi

Arriving at the port
The port is being expanded to handle larger vessels and improve operations. Docking locations can differ, though the port is near the town.
A free shuttle bus often runs to the Best Western Plus Atlantic, where internet access and drinks are available for purchase. Someone outside the hotel arranges taxis: city journeys were $15usd/hour, while sites beyond the city cost $10/hour per person. The driver stays with you, and no money is paid until you return to the hotel, where the organiser collects payment.

Ghana's first deepwater seaport, the twin city of Sekondi-Takoradi, has prospered greatly but retains a laid-back ambience, particularly around its inviting beaches. Monkey Hill, a tropical primate reserve, stands in the city’s heart. The nearby Dutch-built Fort Orange dates from the 17th century and now operates as a lighthouse.

Further afield, reflect on the tragic Atlantic slave-trade history at Elmina Castle, the earliest known European structure in the tropics, built by the Portuguese in 1482. At Cape Coast Castle, walk the ramparts and watch villagers mend fishing nets before heading to sea in painted fishing canoes.
At Kakum National Park, explore one of Ghana’s last remaining tropical forests by walking through its verdant canopy.
Food and shopping
The ‘Artisan center’ offers a selection of Ghanaian souvenirs. Another popular shopping stop is ‘Takoraki Market’; haggle to secure the best possible price. Its offerings range from cuisine and electronics to local fashion.
Money
One new Ghana cedi contains one hundred new Ghana pesewas (Gp). Ghanaian coins are issued in 1, 5, 10, 20 and 50 pesewas, plus GH₵1 and GH₵2. One-pesewa coins are rare, as it is difficult to find items costing less than 5 pesewas.
Cash euros, dollars and pounds sterling are the most useful currencies to bring, and numerous air-con booths can change them easily and safely until 21:00.
