The resort area of Sousse is perfectly integrated into the city and the visitor welcomed to participate in its exuberance. Proud of its heritage, museums and monuments are accessible and opened with pleasure to its guests and the Medina with its tiny colorful shops overflowing with silver jewelry, pure wool blankets, copper and carpets bustle with activity under the towering walls of the ribat.
Sousse was an important commercial and military port during the Aghlabid period (800–909) and is a typical example of a town dating from the first centuries of Islam.
Sousse has what is probably the most intact medieval medina anywhere in the world - it is an UNESCO World Heritage Site for this reason.
Getting around
Walking around the fishing boats at the port is a pleasant way to spend time, and families with children may wish to take a trip on one of the 'pirate' ships which offer fishing and other nautical activities.
Tuk-Tuk's and Mini-trains can get you a fun ride to Port El Kantaoui, which is about 12 km away. They are open, shared transports and start their journey when they're full (or almost). Expect to pay 2 dinars per journey at the first and 2,5 at the latter. Tuk-tuks are bright purple.
Nearby places
Visits can also be made from here to the 8th century Mosque of Kairouan, the huge amphitheater at El Djem or the coastal resort of Monastir with its old fort and mosque.
Food and shopping
The medina of Sousse is fairly good for shopping. Many shop keepers have discovered that there is a good policy of keeping prices reasonable.
Every Sunday there is a camel market near the Catacombs.
