Making the most of Hammamet

Use these notes to shape a realistic day ashore, then confirm any time-sensitive information for the date of your call.

01

Arriving at the port

This is a tender port, with tenders arriving at Port Yasmine, around 6 km from the old town. Use cruise-provided transport or take an inexpensive cab.

The marina surroundings are also very pleasant.

Hammamet is the country’s oldest tourist centre. Every resort in Tunis has attractive parks, yet Hammamet stands apart for its luxurious gardens. Town planning follows one main principle: houses should be no taller than cypresses. The city was founded about 5 centuries ago, and its fortress walls and Big Mosque remain preserved. It keeps a one-floor character, while visitors find broad sandy beaches, modern hotels with a high level of service, and plenty of bars, restaurants, stores and markets.

02

Getting around

At 10am each day, 2 amazingly large pirate-galleon reproductions leave the dock packed with tourists. Singing begins even before they leave the harbour, as pirates climb the rigging for acrobatic feats and other crew members lead guests in buccaneer songs and chants.

03

Food and shopping

City visitors can stroll the pedestrian-friendly streets at leisure and browse the many shops and market stalls in the centre. Jasmine products are sold throughout Hammamet and the surrounding area.

04

Money

The currency is the Tunisian Dinar.
