Making the most of Rijeka

Use these notes to shape a realistic day ashore, then confirm any time-sensitive information for the date of your call.

01

Arriving at the port

Croatia's principal seaport, Rijeka sits on Kvarner Bay, an inlet of the Adriatic Sea.

Rijeka's port is in the town center, near the central train and bus stations.

Rijeka's mild Mediterranean climate suits a Korzo stroll and experiencing the city's heart. Beyond Trsat Castle, architecture of interest is limited, but many cafes offer views across the Bay.

02

Getting around

Much of Rijeka can be explored on foot, and traffic is banned from central Korzo.

For more distant or tired visitors, an efficient local bus network circles the central city in a single direction and fans out in every direction. Tourist-useful buses #2 and #8 run to Trsat, providing an alternative to climbing 538 stairs up the hill.

Rijeka's cheap, well organized Taxi service reaches anywhere in the city for approximately €10 or less.

03

Nearby places

On Krk Island, tour Vrbnik, one of Croatia's most famous villages because of its Glagolitic heritage. As the cradle of Croatian literacy and one of Krk's oldest villages, its narrow streets feel like a journey back in time. Its nest of old houses and winding lanes naturally contains the world‘s narrowest street.

04

Food and shopping

Rijeka has numerous small and medium stores alongside large shopping centers for every taste. Rijeka Tower is among the newest and biggest malls in this part of Europe.

Stately 19th-century buildings, a tree-lined harbor promenade, museums and restaurants make this an enjoyable place.

Rijeka Central Market is a bustling place for fresh produce, seafood, local products and souvenirs.
