Cres is Croatia's second-largest island: long, hilly and one of the remaining habitats of the rare griffon vulture. It contains the freshwater Lake Vrana. According to its myth, a wealthy sister refused money to her poor sister and was punished when her castle sank beneath the lake; on windy days, the bell atop its tower can still be heard. Cres town is a typical Mediterranean fishermen's paradise.
