Making the most of Poros

Arriving at the port
Ships anchor just beyond town and tender passengers ashore.
Holy Monastery of Zoodochos Pigi, founded in 1720 a.d, stands 4km east of Poros's main town on a pine-forest slope. A group of Mount Athos monks took refuge there in 1814; a few years later they established Zoodochos Pigi Monastery at Longovarda on Paros. The Katholiko, the monastery's main church, is a basilica with a dome and tower-like belfry.
Getting around
A reasonably fit visitor can walk from town centre to the monastery in about an hour. Two buses leave their shared port terminus for the monastery and Neorion, with moderate fares. Timings are generally reliable except at lunchtime, when schoolchildren finish and buses may occasionally be delayed.
The island also has several grey taxis, reasonably cheap to use. From the town centre or port to the monastery, expect about 6 Euros plus a tip.

Opening Hours and
Public Services open Monday to Friday, 8.00am – 2.00pm. Retail Stores & Specialty Shops open Monday to Friday, 9am – 1.30pm and again 5pm – 9pm, and Saturdays 9am – 2pm. Supermarkets open Monday to Friday 9am – 9pm and Saturdays 9am – 6pm. Most Tourist Shops and Convenience Stores have no official opening times and typically trade from dawn until well after midnight in summer.
