Sifnos lies in the western Cyclades between Serifos and Milos. It covers just 74 km2 (29 sq. mi) and had a 2001 population of 2.442, the majority living in its capital Apollonia.
Platis Gialos is Sifnos's cosmopolitan coast. Its name means Wide Seashore in local speech, describing its broad, spacious beach. It is among the island's busiest beaches and considered one of the Cyclades' largest beaches in the region.
Getting around
Platis Gialos has major archaeological interest. At the beach's north-east end are remains of the White Tower, the most well-known of the island's 57 ancient towers. In southern Akrotiri, excavations have brought a prehistoric cemetery to light. In the north, Panagia Vounou monastery sits atop the hill, dates from 1813 and has magical views over the island.

Touring Sifnos brings surprises for every taste: archaeological sites, churches, monasteries, green land, wild hill masses, endless beaches and small sheltered coves all interact with the waves.

Public Services open Monday to Friday from 8.00am – 2.00pm. Retail Stores & Specialty Shops trade Monday to Friday 9am – 1.30pm and again 5pm – 9pm, and Saturdays 9am – 2pm. Supermarkets are open Monday to Friday 9am – 9pm and Saturdays 9am – 6pm. Most Tourist Shops and Convenience Stores have no official schedule and normally open from dawn until well after midnight in summer.
