Making the most of Patmos

01

Arriving at the port

Tenders land at Skala, Patmos's small and pretty port. The main town, Chora, is a few miles away up a very winding hill, but a taxi there costs only about €7 and you can walk downhill back to the port.

Smaller vessels can berth directly in the centre of Skala.

Bring along a printable map.

Patmos is a charming, picturesque and peaceful island with a very salubrious climate and clear atmosphere. Although vegetation is rather limited, this does nothing to lessen the beauty of its lacy coastline, delightful bays and surrounding islets. Its 3000 inhabitants are spread between Hora, Skala, which is also the principal port, and Kampos. Removed from mass-tourism flows, Patmos suits those seeking alternatives. The combination of spirituality, wild untouched nature and 20th century tourism makes the island unique and brings many visitors back repeatedly.

02

Getting around

At the Monastery of St. John, the ship's tour may cost a little more than paying for cabs up and back, admissions and so on, but it could avoid plenty of worry and hassle. The monastery and cave stand on a hill that would present a serious walking challenge. It is possible, but a long walk, particularly on a hot day.

Immediately north of the ferry dock is Skala Town beach, a narrow pebble strip with shade from several trees, providing welcome shelter on a hot day.

03

Nearby places

Chora Town's quaint whitewashed houses, divided by narrow lanes and quiet shaded squares, date from the Middle Ages. Visit an authentic Greek shop or taverna, or wander away for a close look at the sadly sail-less windmills.
