Making the most of Opatija
Use these notes to shape a realistic day ashore, then confirm any time-sensitive information for the date of your call.
Arriving at the port
Turn left after leaving the tender to reach the entrance to Angiolina Park, allowing time to see Villa Angiolina. Continue along the principal street to admire numerous Austrian villas, then follow the waterfront past Hotel Kvarner and the lady with the seagull statue. Stop for lunch or afternoon tea at any of the pleasant hotels or cafés.
Opatija is notably built on a hill rising inland from the shore. Houses, hotels and flats gain breathtaking views, but the return walk will be tiring at the very least.
Getting around
Opatija is not primarily a museum or gallery destination. Come to swim in coves beside the Lungomare or simply walk along its excellent seaside promenade.
Nearby places
A popular resort in both winter and summer, Opatija averages 10 °C during winter and 25 °C in summer. Beautiful bay-laurel woods surround it. The rocky, picturesque coast extending north and south contains several smaller winter resorts.
