Sightseeing
New Island is the Falklands' most southwesterly island, about 8 miles long and 1/2 mile wide. Its landscape recalls parts of Scotland: a windswept, hilly island of tall brown grass and peat bogs. Like the wider Falklands, it has no native trees, though shrubs and bushes grow there.
The Falklands are often assumed to be cold and snow-covered, but although very windy, they have a narrow temperature range. The islands are as close to the South Pole as London is to the North Pole, yet the climate stays temperate all year. Snow is rare and, when it falls, rarely settles.
