Making the most of Mljet

01

Arriving at the port

The untamed island of Mljet is one of Croatia's best islands and a paradise for anyone looking to get away from it all. The northwestern third of Mljet island is a national park with two inland lakes and miles of cycling and strolling trails. There are few residents, no large towns and only one major road that runs north-south through the pines, oak trees and macchia. Mljet is the most thickly forested island in the Adriatic. Lying off the coast of the Peljesac peninsula, Mljet is an easy day trip from Dubrovnik during the summer when ferries are frequent and easily accessible for an overnight stay year round.

Most cruise ships that call at Mljet dock by Sobra, the principal port town on the island’s central-northern coast. This town is the administrative centre and offers a fishing harbour with ferry connections to the Croatian mainland (e.g., Dubrovnik). Cruise vessels typically anchor off the coast and tender passengers ashore rather than use large modern terminals.

02

Getting around

There is an entrance fee of €20 per person to enter the Mljet National Park. If you are joining an excursion organised by a travel agency to Mljet, it may not include this entrance fee, so make sure you check before booking. The entrance fee includes the boat round trip Mali Most - Pristaniste - Sveta Marija, operated by solar powered boats, roughly half-hourly departures from any point.
