Milos lies midway between Athens and Crete in the Aegean Sea. Its volcanic origins created colourful beaches, rocks and water, earning the name 'island of colour'. Venus de Milo, now a centrepiece of the Louvre in Paris, was discovered here.
Getting around
Numerous boats depart Adamas port each day for circuits around the island. They visit many beaches accessible only from the water, including Kalamos and Kleftiko, where passengers can swim in crystal-clear seas. Trips also take in beautiful island sights such as Glaronissia, Arkoudes and Sykia, with a stop at nearby Kimolos.

Milos has more than 70 beaches. The best known is Sarakiniko, where wind and water have smoothly sculpted soft limestone into a remarkable landscape. Every summer day it fills with swimmers and snorkellers and, together with Kleftiko, ranks among the island's most visited places.
The hilltop capital, Plaka, is only 5 km away and overlooks the sea. Its characteristic whitewashed Greek homes, Frankish castle on the ancient acropolis, folk-art and archaeological museums and well-preserved theatre make it essential to visit.

Opening Hours and
Public services operate Monday to Friday from 8.00am to 2.00pm. Retail stores and specialist shops open Monday to Friday between 9am and 1.30pm, then again from 5pm to 9pm; Saturday trading is 9am to 2pm. Supermarkets operate Monday to Friday from 9am to 9pm and Saturdays from 9am to 6pm. Most tourist shops and convenience stores keep no formal hours and usually trade from dawn until well after midnight in summer.
