Making the most of L Anse aux Meadows Newfoundland

Use these notes to shape a realistic day ashore, then confirm any time-sensitive information for the date of your call.

01

Arriving at the port

Ships cannot dock at this location, so cruise passengers come ashore by tender.

The L'Anse aux Meadows settlement dates to approximately 1000 years ago, consistent with the relative dating of its artefacts and structural forms. Archaeologists found eight buildings, thought to use sod laid over timber frames. Associated artefacts suggest that these served as homes or workshops. The largest dwelling, containing several rooms, measured 28.8 by 15.6 m (94.5 by 51 ft).

02

Getting around

Three reconstructed Norse buildings form the centrepiece of this archaeological location, the earliest known European settlement in the New World. UNESCO declared its remains a World Heritage Site in 1978. Exhibitions cover Viking life, artefacts and the site's archaeological discovery, while walking trails lead towards nearby lakes and bays.

03

Nearby places

Norstead lies about 1 mile along from L’Anse aux Meadows National Historical Site and recreates a Viking trading port. Visitors can also try traditional Norse games and learn yarn-spinning or pottery-making techniques.

04

Food and shopping

The Artisan’s Marketplace at Norstead in L'Anse aux Meadows opens in line with visiting cruise-ship schedules. Sellers dress in traditional Norse costume, and many goods are produced by the town's skilled craftspeople and artists.

05

Money

The currency is the Canadian dollar.

ATMs are found in many supermarkets, shopping centres, airports and similar places. Most connect to international networks, most commonly Cirrus, Plus, Star and Maestro. A major credit card can also provide an ATM cash advance, but this usually costs more because interest begins immediately in addition to the service fee.

06

Staying connected

Canada's principal languages are English at 59.3% and French at 23.2%, both official, with other languages accounting for 17.5%. Quebec and New Brunswick are the most "French", while the remainder of the country is English-speaking.
