Arriving at the port
Ships berth beside Baie Comeau's combined ferry and cruise terminal.
The city centre lies some distance from the terminal, perhaps 2 km away. School buses provide a shuttle into town for 5 USD and also operate certain shore excursions.
Public transport calls on the principal road rather than at the ferry terminal. It runs only once each hour between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m., with no service on Sunday.
Baie Comeau is an unattractive city of 21,500 people whose existence stems from Robert McCormick. The former Chicago Tribune owner chose in 1936 to establish an immense pulp-and-paper mill here.
Glacier Exploration Station stages a world-class multimedia presentation, taking visitors through 20,000 years of history to show how ice shaped both the terrain and distant human ancestors. Allow two hours to experience all its sound and visual displays.
Retreating glaciers and exceptional natural events formed the Baie-Comeau region. Among them was a meteorite strike that created the enormous Manicouagan crater.
Getting around
Walk through the attractive quartier Sainte-Amélie, discover local fauna at Maison de la Faune, or enter the new Centré Boréal. This intriguing Glacier Centre contains an artificial glacier through which visitors can walk, feeling its temperature, motion and sound.
Food and shopping
A thriving, expansive natural setting and a warm local welcome await only minutes from the harbour. Numerous boutiques provide opportunities to find a suitable souvenir.
