01

Arriving at the port

Cruise vessels call in the centre of town, although most use their own tenders to carry guests into this small harbour.

Take the available printable map with you.

Hydra belongs to Greece's Saronic Islands and lies in the Aegean Sea between the Saronic Gulf and the Argolic Gulf, separated from the Peloponnese by the narrow Hydra Gulf. Tourism sustains the island, and affluent Athenians account for a substantial share of its visitors.

The single principal settlement is simply called "Hydra port." Restaurants, shops, markets and galleries serving residents and visitors line its crescent-shaped harbour. Handsome Italian-style villas look down on the water, while a donkey ride into the rocky hills reaches magnificent views from the Monastery of St. Constantine.

Activities include swimming, fishing, snorkelling, diving, windsurfing and water skiing, as well as walking and climbing in attractive surroundings.

Several historic Hydriote mansions have become museums depicting everyday life during Hydra's distinguished past. They usually appear on island maps available locally.

02

Getting around

Motor vehicles are prohibited, leaving donkeys and water taxis to provide most public transport. The settled area is compact enough, however, for most journeys to be made on foot.

03

Money

The currency is the euro.

04
