Making the most of Herradura
Use these notes to shape a realistic day ashore, then confirm any time-sensitive information for the date of your call.
Arriving at the port
Ships anchor here, with tenders bringing passengers ashore. Rivers flowing into Herradura Bay sometimes draw crocodiles into the water to feed. Black sand makes them difficult to spot, so take great care if swimming in the bay.
Set along the Central Pacific Coast with rolling mountains behind it, Playa Herradura is a tropical escape, where palms frame black-sand beaches and glistening aqua-green water invites travellers to relax.
Food and shopping
Eating out in Costa Rica is generally easy to arrange, and kitchen hygiene is typically high wherever you go, so food poisoning is unlikely. Costly restaurants do not always serve the best meals: visitors are encouraged to try the smaller, local-favourite establishments known as sodas, where cooking is authentic and often matches or surpasses more expensive venues.
Money
Colón(es) is the local currency. Around 575 Colones equals 1 US Dollar. ATMs are widely available and usually dispense both US Dollars and Colones.
