Gudhjem is one of Denmark's most attractively placed villages, perhaps the nearest the country comes to a Mediterranean-, rocky-coastline- or mountain-like settlement.
Many steep streets are cut into rock; one is so steep that cycling downhill is forbidden.
For the past century, artists and craft-art workers have been drawn to Gudhjem by its unusual light, village charm and countryside. Oluf Høst is probably the best known.
Gudhjem and its surrounds suit walks of many lengths, with extremely varied terrain and numerous woodland and coastal paths.

Nearby places
Bornholm has many scenic places for enjoying countryside and each other's company at a gentle pace. North Bornholm's distinctive rocky coast is broken only by small, intimate bathing beaches.

Denmark is outside the EURO-monetary system, but major shops will probably show prices in Danish kroner and EURO (€). Denmark accepts most major international credit cards.

Danish is spoken, and english is widely used.

General hours are Monday to Thursday 9.30/10.00 a.m. to 5.30 p.m.; Friday 9.30/10 a.m. to 7/8 p.m. Shopping centers may remain open until 7/8 p.m. on weekdays. Saturday shop closing is generally 12.00 or 1 p.m., department stores 2 p.m. On the first Saturday each month, shops may stay open to 5 p.m., a rule widely used in Copenhagen, other cities and larger towns.
