The beautifully preserved historic town of Aeroskobing lies on idyllic Aero, east of mainland Denmark and south of Funen Island. A prosperous merchants’ town in the 1600s, it has narrow streets lined with 17th- and 18th-century houses. Its main attraction is Flaskeskibssamlingen, the Ships-in-a-Bottle Museum, with 1700 exhibits from Bottle Peter’s lifetime work. Two local-history museums are also here.

Ærøskøbing is an appealing old market town on a promontory along the north coast. Given its trading charter in 1398, it prospered through trade with South Jutland and remains a well-preserved 17th- and 18th-century merchants’ township. 36 houses are protected, including Denmark’s oldest post office (1749) and Køobinghus (1645). Hammerich’s House (ca 1700) has furniture and glazed tiles, while the former home of sculptor Hammerich and Hans Billedhugger’s House are furnished as museums.

Walk the cobbled streets of the medieval town centre, see fishermen’s houses from the 17th century and take a tour around the island.
