Making the most of Duba

Arriving at the port
Set in the far north of Saudi Arabia, Duba is the country's first port of call after ships leave the Suez Canal for the Red Sea, opposite Hurghada. There is currently little in the town, although it is intended to become the gateway to Neom, the futuristic desert city planned without cars and with monorail transport. Duba also provides access to Wadi Tahib and is recognised for its striking beaches.
Saudi Arabia has introduced an eVisa for cruise passengers departing from the country or arriving through one of its ports. The cost is about 130 Euro.
Saudi Arabia do's and dont's
Alcohol and drugs are completely prohibited in the country, where Sharia, or Islamic law, is strictly applied. Ship bars open and alcohol is served in restaurants once the vessel is 12 nautical miles from the Saudi coast.
Bring a doctor's prescription for any medication. In public, men and women should dress modestly, with shoulders and knees covered, and avoid tight clothing or garments carrying profane language or images. Female tourists no longer need to cover their heads while out and about, but must do so in places of worship.
Walking along the street holding hands or making other public displays of affection is not considered acceptable.
Homosexual and extra-marital sexual relationships, including adultery, are illegal and may incur severe penalties. Being transgender is also illegal. Transgender travellers to Saudi Arabia are likely to encounter significant difficulties and risks if identified by the authorities. MSC Cruises is still deciding its approach, but has confirmed that gay cruisers are not banned from entering the Kingdom and sailing.

Under Sharia law, public observance of religions other than Islam is prohibited, so check any jewellery. Jewish visitors may enter the Kingdom, except where they hold an Israeli passport or have a stamp from a visit to Israel.
Photography or video recording without permission is not allowed.
Locals call the port city of Duba the Pearl of the Red Sea. Regular ferries operate to and from Egypt and Jordan, while divers visit the sandy, coral-fringed island of Al Numan. Seafood is a local speciality; Al Mina and Alseajan are among the restaurants to try, with the latter offering harbour-side seating.

Mall opening hours are 10:00 AM to 12:00 AM from Saturday to Tuesday, and 10:00 AM to 2:00 AM on Wednesday & Thursday.
Money
Saudi Arabia uses the Saudi riyal (SAR).
Staying connected
Arabic is the official Saudi Arabian language; English is nevertheless widely understood.
Internet access is available in malls and cafes.
