Chania Crete

Chania city and seaport in Greece, is located in northwestern Crete (Kríti). It is the second largest city on Crete and considered among the most picturesque in Greece. It is built around an old Venetian Port and Castle and extends to a new part which boasts parks and wide streets.

You will be docked the Port of Souda, about 4km from Chania. The bus stop from Souda to Chania Central is about 50 meters distance from the port. When a cruise ship arrives at the port the frequency of the buses is every 30 minutes. The fare is €2.50 one way and is usually bus 13. Bus 14 is an express bus and cost €15. But the portauthorities may organise a shuttlebus also to the covered Marketplace, the fare of this busticket is €2 one way.

It's only about 10 minutes on the bus which drops you by the Market building in Chania.

Some notable sights include the Mosque of Djamissi; the remains of the Venetian "arsenali", where ships were once built and repaired; the Orthodox Church of St. Nicholas, the huge Municipal Market that connects to the new town at its opposite entrance; the marvelous Archaeological Museum occupying a 16th Century Venetian church; and many of the lovely side streets filled with shops, craftsmen, and beautiful architecture.

The old town is centered around the harbor, it is a maze of alleys and houses that have been standing for many hundred years rebuilt, ruined and built up again with details from the different epochs. The old town is full of souvenir, art and crafts shops; the new quarters house the regular span of shops, here you can find the most of your needs for the hiking or other adventures. The beaches begin in the city a bit away but not far from the old town. The nearest one is Nea Hora, a 1 km. walk from the west end of the Old Town.

In the old town, the former Mosque near the water has been converted into an art gallery. No charge to enter.

There are buses that run all over chania. Bus 23 has 25 stops that run along the resort beach areas and can take up to one hour to travel the entire route. Like many buses in Greece, you pay one fare whether you travel the entire route or part of it. The cost is €3.50 each trip. Pay in cash, credit card or electronic with google pay.

Glass-Bottom Boat tours are a great way to sea the magnificent sea life of Greece. The tour takes you to both Thodorou and Lazareta and costs €38.

Horse and cart operators are available for transportaion for about €20 per 15 minutes.

2 beaches that are known for being safe for families and children are the Agia Marina and Platanias. Beachs with sun chairs and umbrellas are normally under government lease by private operators. Some charge a daily fee for sunchairs and others offer free sun chairs if you purchase food or beverages.

Tourist Shops and Convenience Stores: most of these do not have official opening hours and are usually open from dawn to well after midnight during the summer months.
