01

Arriving at the port

This port is served by tender.

Öland is sparsely populated, with farmland across most of the island and woodland in the north. Kalmar Strait separates it from the mainland, to which the 6 km Öland Bridge has connected it since opening on 30 September 1972.

The city is best known for a once-magnificent fortress, now in ruins.

Solliden Palace, the Swedish Royal Family’s official summer residence, is a couple of kilometres outside the city centre. Borgholm Sports Field hosts the annual July 14 celebration of Crown Princess Victoria’s birthday.

02

Getting around

Buses are the most convenient island transport, covering most of Öland and bringing visitors within cycling distance of sights and beautiful beaches. Bringing a bike is useful and recommended, because passengers can take bicycles onto buses. It is also the best way to experience Öland’s distinctive landscape, and the long coast has excellent cycling trails.

03

Money

Prices use kronor, the plural of Sweden’s national currency, the Swedish krona (SEK). Typical rates are 5.91 SEK for 1 USD, 9.43 SEK for 1 EUR, and 12.28 SEK for 1 GBP.
