Arriving at the port
Aviles is a harbour city in Asturias, north-west Spain, with its old town only a brief walk from the port.
Beside the harbour facilities stands the Oscar Niemeyer International Cultural Center, the Brazilian architect's only work in Spain. Its site formerly belonged to the port esplanades.
Most of the old town in Aviles is pedestrianised and arranged around Plaza de Espana. Quiet boulevards connect its characteristic squares, with narrow, twisting lanes between them. Architectural highlights include the palaces of Valdecarzana and Camposagrado and Sabugo's 13th-century church.
