Making the most of Astypalea
Use these notes to shape a realistic day ashore, then confirm any time-sensitive information for the date of your call.
Arriving at the port
Astypalea’s small, charming cruise port has a distinctly Greek-island character, unlike large commercial cruise terminals. It serves ferries, yachts and smaller cruise vessels, giving an authentic island arrival rather than big-ship infrastructure.
The port is at Pera Yialos (Skala Bay), immediately beneath Chora, the island’s historic capital, whose narrow streets and traditional whitewashed houses climb the hillside.
Sightseeing
This scenery gives arrivals a dramatic setting: above the harbour are the Venetian-era Astypalea Castle, blue-domed churches and picturesque windmills.
Getting around
From the port, visit Chora’s fortress, traditional villages and local beaches at Livadi and Maltezana, or take a boat excursion.
