Making the most of Astypalea
Use these notes to shape a realistic day ashore, then confirm any time-sensitive information for the date of your call.
Arriving at the port
Astypalea’s cruise port is small, charming, and distinctly Greek-island in character — quite different from large commercial cruise terminals. It serves ferries, smaller cruise vessels and yachts, and offers an authentic island arrival experience rather than big-ship infrastructure.
The port is located in Pera Yialos (Skala Bay), just below the island’s historic capital (Chora), with narrow streets and traditional whitewashed houses rising up the hillside.
Sightseeing
This scenic backdrop makes the arrival dramatic — you’ll often see the Venetian-era Astypalea Castle, churches with blue domes, and picturesque windmills above the harbor.
Getting around
From the port you can explore Chora’s fortress, local beaches (Livadi, Maltezana), traditional villages, and boat excursions.
