Making the most of Zihuatanejo Ixtapa

Arriving at the port
Cruise vessels anchor in Zihuatanejo Bay and use tenders to reach Zihua's small dock. The shops of Zihuatanejo are an easy three-minute walk away. Ixtapa is approximately three miles distant and accessible by bus, taxi or shore excursion; a taxi there costs about $4.
Picturesque fishing village Zihuatanejo has four attractive beaches and a range of small hotels, from affordable pensions to 5 star luxury Small Inns. Its many restaurants extend from little family-owned, thatch-roofed eateries to exotic Gourmet dining.
Getting around
Taxis are plentiful and inexpensive.
Many resorts sell day passes. La Casa Que Canta and Tides are world famous.
Nearby places
On Mexico's Pacific Coast in Guerrero state, Ixtapa is a delightful getaway for both families and young people. It has a timeless atmosphere and provides an excellent escape, with rolling mountains and sparkling beaches around this historic town and much to discover and learn.
Food and shopping
Mercado de los Artisans is an open Zihuatanejo market with hundreds of stalls where crafts people sell everything from blankets to elaborate silver pieces. Unlike Ixtapa's shops, it offers genuine bargains.
Whenever a cruise vessel is visiting, markets are normally arranged beside the beach near the pier.
Money
Mexico uses the peso (MXN). Its symbol matches the US dollar sign, which can cause some confusion. Dollar prices in tourist areas carry "US$" or an S with a double stroke. About 17 peso equals 1US$.
US dollars are commonly accepted in the far north and in tourist destinations elsewhere.
Credit cards have lower acceptance than in Europe or the USA. Some businesses add an extra charge of around 5% for these payments.
Staying connected
Almost everyone in Ixtapa speaks and understands at least some English.
Customer cafés offering free WiFi are plentiful.
