At the north end of downtown, City Dock, also called the Cruiseship Dock, is a t-shaped dock.

The fur trade brought Russian traders here in the early 1800s, making this one of USA’s oldest settlements. In 1868, Americans set up a military post and named it Fort Wrangell. During the great Gold Rush of the late 19th century, the town boomed, with gambling halls, dance halls, booze and lawlessness. Commercial fishing and timber still underpin Wrangell’s economy today. Explore the nearby Stikine River, home to hundreds of migrating bird species, take in spectacular glacial valleys, or watch bears in the Anan Falls rain forest.

The Wrangell Museum, within the James and Elsie Nolan Center, should not be missed. Visitors can stroll through exhibits ranging from large, brilliant brass Russian samovars to intricately executed Tlingit carvings, hand-woven baskets and gold rush memorabilia. Ancient petroglyphs, rock carvings of undetermined age and authorship, are also displayed.

At Petroglyph Beach State Historic Park, the tidewater setting contains more such rocks. A wooden, handicap-accessible boardwalk brings visitors to an observation deck overlooking the beach.

Walking and hiking are favourite Wrangell pastimes, with a number of trails through uncrowded forest, along shorelines and into mountain country. Short on time? From Volunteer Park ballfields, a one-mile stroll crosses cranberry bogs and muskeg with spectacular mountain vistas.

A sales tax applies in most states, from 2.9% to nearly 10% of the retail price; a typical rate is 4-6%. Posted prices almost never include it, other than for gasoline and, in most states, alcoholic beverages consumed on-premises. It is instead calculated and added to the total when you pay.

Many supermarkets and drugstores in major metropolitan areas, including New York and Los Angeles, routinely open 24 hours per day, 7 days per week. Most other large retailers, shopping centers and department stores typically trade from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday to Saturday, often opening for shorter Sunday hours of generally 11 a.m. or noon to 5 or 6 p.m. On holidays, stores tend to remain open, except for important holidays such as Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day, when they are generally closed.
