Making the most of Wala

Use these notes to shape a realistic day ashore, then confirm any time-sensitive information for the date of your call.

01

Arriving at the port

This is a tender port.

Wala is located off the NE coast of Malakula Island, Vanuatu. Ships can anchor between the tiny islands of Wala - a coral atoll - and Rano, so you are free to relax on pure white beaches and swim or enjoy snorkelling in the translucent waters of either island.

The island residents are gracious in allowing tourists to tour the island, as they consider the island to be taboo for non-natives. You can take a guided tour through the village to see cooking and hunting demonstrations, perhaps enjoy a traditional ceremony, or simply learn about their centuries-old history. The locals are renowned for their magnificent dancing displays and these are not be missed. It's a great place to obtain some very good quality handicrafts from the local markets and stores.

Reef shoes are advisable for swimming and snorkelling.

02

Getting around

There are outriggers that the islanders will take you out on for about $5pp.

The villagers meet you at the tender dock and take you on a tour of the 3 or 4 villages on the Island, with lots of demonstrations of local customs and crafts on the way. Most of the places have a box or something out to collect the coins.

03

Money

The local currency is the Vatu (VT), which is worth approximately 1 US cent or 0,7 Euro cents.

Tipping is not expected in Vanuatu, nor is haggling or bargaining.

04

Staying connected

There are three official languages: English, French and Bislama.
