Making the most of Wala

Use these notes to shape a realistic day ashore, then confirm any time-sensitive information for the date of your call.

01

Arriving at the port

This is a port served by tender.

Off the NE coast of Vanuatu's Malakula Island lies Wala. Ships can anchor between the tiny islands of Wala, a coral atoll, and Rano, leaving you free to relax on the pure white beaches or swim and snorkel in the translucent waters around either island.

Island residents graciously permit tourists to visit, although they regard their island as taboo to non-natives. A guided village tour can include cooking and hunting demonstrations, perhaps a traditional ceremony, or simply lessons in their centuries-old history. The locals are renowned for magnificent dancing displays, which should not be missed. Local markets and stores are also a great place to obtain very good quality handicrafts.

Reef shoes are recommended for swimming and snorkelling.

02

Getting around

Local islanders will take visitors out in outriggers for about $5pp.

At the tender dock, villagers meet you and lead tours of the Island's 3 or 4 villages, with many demonstrations of local customs and crafts along the way. Most places put out a box or something to collect coins.

03

Money

The local Vatu (VT) is worth approximately 1 US cent, or 0,7 Euro cents.

In Vanuatu, neither tipping nor haggling or bargaining is expected.

04

Staying connected

The three official languages in Vanuatu are English, French and Bislama.
