Making the most of Vlissingen

01

Arriving at the port

You will dock in Buitenhaven, just steps from the train station and about a 15 minutes walk from the town centre. Check in with your foreign Credit Card, Maestro or Visa, and use that same card to check out. This system covers all Netherlands public transport, including Train, Bus and Metro etc. Remember to check in and out!

Flushing, Dutch: Vlissingen, is a port town in the Dutch province of Zeeland and its second largest town, with 34,000 inhabitants. Industrial in character, it is linked by a large canal to Middelburg and then to the inland lake of Veerse Meer. Flushing is noted for its 2.6 km long boulevard.

02

Getting around

Every 30 minutes, trains leave for Middelburg, a 7 minute ride, and Goes, a 21 minute ride.

03

Nearby places

Middelburg is in Zeeland's capital. An old city, its centre has a small canal encircling about half of it, lined with boats and cycleways, which makes for a very nice and distinctly Dutch sight. A large square, often used for markets and overlooked by a large townhall, dominates the centre. Around it is the largely pedestrianized shopping area.

In the middle of Zeeland province sits Goes, part of the area called Zuid-Beveland. Farmers, townspeople and country folk from Zuid-Beveland traditionally came there to shop, and if you visit Goes on its Tuesday market day, you will find they still do.

04

Food and shopping

In most Zeeland cities and villages, Sunday is strictly observed as a day of rest, so no shops open.

Nothing is more typical of Zeeland food than eating mussels.
