Arriving at the port
Viareggio is a tender port, with tenders taking you close to the town and its beautiful boulevard.
Whether you want to swim, sunbathe or stroll around the fish market, Viareggio offers what you need for a relaxing day and provides a starting point for a Florence excursion. Follow Dante, Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci's footsteps while admiring Renaissance beauty. You could instead explore Lucca's medieval charm or Pisa's Tower.
Sandy beaches line the coast. Most belong to private facilities, although a free beach area is in the city's southern part. At private beach establishments, a price includes a beach chair, umbrella and facilities such as changing rooms and restrooms; most also have a snack bar. The sea is normally calm and suitable for swimming.
Getting around
Near the city center, Viareggio railway station has 60 daily trains on the Rome–Pisa–La Spezia–Genoa line, as well as the line to Pisa and Florence.
Between the beach and town runs a long seafront promenade with shops, cafes and restaurants. At its south end is Liberty-style architecture. Especially during the evening passeggiata, the promenade is where to see and be seen.
