Making the most of Ulvik
Use these notes to shape a realistic day ashore, then confirm any time-sensitive information for the date of your call.
Arriving at the port
Ulvik stands at the end of Hardangerfjord after a beautiful 6 hour sail-in.
Ulvik harbour has straightforward approach conditions without height or depth restrictions. Anchorage is available in Ulvikpollen and Ulvikfjorden, while smaller craft can berth at Tyssevikje quay.
The tender landing occupies the middle of this very small town.
Ulvik is rich in history, but best known for the superb views from Brakanes Hotel's terrace directly beside the tender pier.
A visit to Eidfjord Nature centre, Voringsfossen Waterfalls and even the Folk museum at Utne is recommended.
Voss is also within easy driving distance, offering its own folk museum, cable car and shops, together with Norheim craft centre and local walks.
The Stream Nest at Osa, home to the world's purest water, has attractive troll gardens. It is worth visiting and only 15 minutes' drive away.
Money
The Norwegian crown, or norske krone, is abbreviated kr and used as Norway's currency. A 1/100th krone is called øre. 1.00 EUR = about 8 NOK.
Norway calls its ATMs Minibank.
Nearly every shop accepts major cards such as Mastercard and Visa. Bring a passport or driver's licence, because identification is required when using a credit card.
Staying connected
Norway's official language is Norwegian. It is very close to, and mutually intelligible with, the two other Scandinavian languages, while English is widely spoken.
Most Norwegian households have an internet connection, often broadband, making Cybercafés difficult to find away from large cities because the market is relatively small. Most public libraries provide free internet access. WiFi is found in many places but is not free.
Opening Hours and
Opening hours in Norway have improved, yet many smaller shops continue to close early on Saturday, typically at 1 PM or 3 PM, and nearly everything shuts on Sundays. Signs often display "9-21 (9-18)", indicating 9 AM–9 PM on weekdays and 9 AM–6 PM Saturday.
