Arriving at the port
There are several piers in the port for big ships, which is in the center of Siracusa.

From the bay walk right to the bridge over the canal to Ortigia, the historical heart of the town. There are fewer archaeological sites exposed to view here (the island has been heavily built-up ever since the time of the Greeks), but this is the part of Siracusa you're likely to be wandering around after you've 'done' the mainland points of interest. The Tourist Office is on Via San Sebastiano (opposite the Catacombs of San Giovanni).
Getting around
The center of town is easily visitable on foot - the island of Ortygia contains most of the sights, and is compact and pleasant for strolling. The archaeological area is about 25 minutes' walk away from the island.
Nearby places
Around Siracusa there are plenty of options for day trips. One of the best options is a day trip to the Baroque town of Noto, which is less than an hour away by bus. Two companies, AST and Interbus, run services from Siracusa. Both start on Ortigia near Riva della Posta, and both stop at the Foro Siracusano, where the news-stand sells tickets and can advise on timetables. It's an interesting journey, past ruins, hills and lemon and orange groves. Shortly after leaving Siracusa, after crossing the rush-lined river Ciane, you can see the two standing columns of the Greek Temple of Jove (to the right of the road).
The vibrant city of Catania is an easy train-ride away, and has plenty to occupy the tourist for at least a day.
For those with cars, there are plenty of other archaeological sites to explore in the surrounding area, and also several beaches.
Food and shopping
The outdoor market in Ortigia is one of the most amazing places. Here you can find the freshest and finest fish, vegetables and fruits available. The experience and color are memorable.
Other than food, you can find almost anything you will need for you holiday experience in Syracuse from clothing to extra baggage.
One of the most popular craft products in Syracuse is papyrus paper. Local pottery is also a common product to buy. If you are looking for the perfect gift, buy a bottle of Nero d'Avola or a jar of their famous fish preserves.

Opening Hours and Holidays: Most shops and businesses in Italy open from Monday to Saturday from around 8am until 1pm, and from about 4pm until 7pm, though many shops close on Saturday afternoons and Monday mornings, and in the south the day can begin and end an hour later. In the north some businesses work to a 9am-5pm day to facilitate international dealings. Traditionally, everything except bars and restaurants closes on Sunday, though most towns have a pasticceria open in the mornings, while in large cities and tourist areas, Sunday opening is becoming more common.
