Arriving at the port
Cruise ships calling at Sal in Cape Verde typically berth at the Port of Palmeira on the island's west coast.
The harbour is approximately 5 kilometres (3.1 miles) from Espargos, the principal town, and about 8 kilometres (5 miles) from popular Santa Maria.
Taxi: readily available vehicles at the port provide a quick, convenient journey to Santa Maria or Espargos.
Shuttle services: some cruise operators run shuttles to Santa Maria.
Car rental: hiring a vehicle can provide a flexible way to discover the island at your own pace.
Getting around
Pedra de Lume Salt Crater lies east of Espargos. This unusual natural attraction lets visitors float in a saline lake inside a volcanic crater; activities include floating in the salt water and exploring the crater.
Buracona – Blue Eye is on the island's north-west coast. Here, a natural pool and underwater cave produce a striking blue reflection when sunlight reaches the correct angle. Activities include swimming, photography and exploring the natural formations.
