Making the most of Safi

Arriving at the port
The berth is located in the town centre.
Safi stands on the Atlantic Ocean in western Morocco. It is the Doukkala-Abda Region's capital, the main fishing port for the national sardine industry and an exporter of phosphates, textiles and ceramics.
Safi is excellent for watching people and browsing shop windows. The city also contains numerous old ruins; no visit is complete without touring the Kechla, an old Portuguese prison, and Dar el Bahar castle, Safi's most photographed building.
Although Safi has its own beach, travelling north on the coastal road towards Oualidia is recommended, with stretches of sand continuing all along the route.
Getting around
Visit ‘Dal el bahar’, a small fortress in the old harbour with an underground passage leading to the sea. Walk down the ramp for a broader sea view.
Food and shopping
The central medina is a traditional Moroccan market closely associated with pottery. Clay vases, plates and other items appear throughout its stalls and are popular with tourists.
Money
The currency is the Moroccan Dirham (MAD), divided into 100 centimes.
