01

Arriving at the port

The discovery of the "Riace Bronzes" made Reggio Calabria internationally renowned, and the city has historic, architectural and environmental interest. One of Calabria's biggest ports sits on the eastern side of the Straits of Messina; the western dock offers a picturesque view across the city.

The dock is a walk from the town and Lungomare.

Lungomare is a beautiful beachside promenade, separated from inland Corso Vittorio Emanuele by a small strip of palm-tree botanical garden. A few blocks east, Corso Giuseppe Garibaldi is Reggio's main artery.

At Via Cardinale Gennaro Portanova, Bronzi di Riace are two famous full-size Greek bronze sculptures of nude, bearded warriors, cast about 460–430 BCE and discovered by chance in Riace Marina waters in 1972. They are currently being restored in Reggio Calabria; the public can visit the restoration laboratory at Palazzo Campanella. Admission is free.

Nearby places

Scilla, 22 km north of Reggio Calabria, is a stunning Greek-origin town opposite the Straits of Messina. It is definitely worth visiting for Tyrrhenian Sea panoramas, historical presence and its beautiful beach. Schilla is known for sword fish fished there since Magna Greek times. Ruffo Castle crowns the famous cape wedged over the sea, with Scilla's beautiful beaches, an annual tourist spot, on both sides.
