Arriving at the port
Puerto Bolívar is a harbour within Machala in Ecuador's El Oro Province. Its cruise terminal lies on the city's south-western coast, specifically on the Jambelí Archipelago.
Central Machala is approximately 8 kilometres from the Puerto Bolívar cruise terminal, a journey of around 15-20 minutes by taxi or car.
Machala's main square provides a peaceful setting with carefully maintained gardens. Visitors can stroll, watch people and enjoy local vendors. A highlight is the statue of Ecuadorian writer and intellectual Juan Montalvo.
Machala Cathedral is a significant architectural landmark in the city. Its features include a beautiful façade and interior, providing a place for photography and quiet reflection.
Getting around
Estero de Santa Rosa is a mangrove estuary offering insight into the local ecosystem. Activities include guided boat trips through the mangroves and wildlife observation, particularly birdwatching.
Compared with the mainland, Isla Jambelí provides a more secluded beach experience. Activities include time on the beach, seafood dining and exploration, with access by boat from Puerto Bolívar.
Tours of local cacao plantations explain the process of making chocolate. Activities include guided visits, tasting sessions and buying locally produced chocolate.
