Arriving at the port
The dock sits in the town centre beneath the impressive Fortezze Medicee. Leaving the ship, the central business district and ferry docks lie to the left; round the bottom of the Fortezze to the right for the marina, yachts, upscale shops and many restaurants and cafes.
Portoferraio is easy to explore on foot.
Taxis are plentiful.

Napoleon was banished to the island, and both his summer and winter homes can be toured. Hike, bicycle, swim, or join locals walking around the plaza at night. The beauty is incredible, with many small hilltop towns, many castles, flowers galore and an interior full of old, little-viewed churches.
